You start with the local train and reach Kasara. You first take a bus to a place called Vishalle. Here one notes the timings of the first local train to kasara offers very little time to catch this bus. There are jeeps/tempos plying in this area so this is not a serious problem. You start the trek from a place which is a few km inside. So, taking the jeep would mean that you can avoid this patch. Now you are in the base village called ???. From here there is a complicated track which goes up and down to a village called Karondha. This takes about an hour if you know the route. Enroute one gets to see some nice views of the Bhavani pinnacle which is very close.
The main range of Sahyadris is also visible in front but mostly covered by the big wall of Chhota Kulang. From Karondha which is the advanced base village there is a obvious trail heading towards a nala coming from the Deccan plateau to the right of Chhota Kulang. There is another hours walk before one reaches the base of the nala and after a long and exhaustive climb one reaches the plateau. Once we are at the plateau there is a possibility of meeting some villagers from Kulangwadi who often come to these parts for wood. So, there are many trails here and one has to choose the ones which start moving towards Kulang. At this stage the Chhota Kulang which is on the right seems like a bigger peak compared to the Kulang. Now one has to pick a trail which goes directly towards the col between Kulang and the Chhota Kulang. This climbs keeps getting steeper as you get near to the col. one has to go on till one reaches the height of the second plateau, where the trail turn left and starts traversing Kulang on the second plateau. It would be an interesting proposition to go up to the col (it will be technical and there is no way you can climb Kulang or Chhota Kulang from here). On this traverse we get some fantastic views of Kalsubai and Madangad including the hole of Madangad. We reach very close to Madangad before the route turns right towards Kulang. From very close to this place there are rock cut steps. The rest of climb is on the rocks and is sometimes exposed but very safe. Finally after about seven to eight hours from the start we reach the top of the mountain. There are some caves before the top but at the top there is a big one and water supply is also very near. From the top we get the first views of Alang and a lot of mountains on the south of Bhandardhara river including Ajoba. The actual top is very thin and on one one end one can walk up to edge very close to Chhota Kulang and get fantastic views of it especially during sunset. One could return by the same route or for a change if you want to make it a little longer could take the following alternative which offers even better views. You first return back to the second plateau and do the traverse to reach the point just below the col. Now instead of descending one could traverse the Chhota Kulang and go completely around it. It is on this traverse that one observes that all sides of Chhota Kulang are vertical and there are no routes to go to the top at all! From here one can descend down to Deccan plateau and walk straight towards the Ghatghar village.
Looking back on this trail one gets a fantastic views of all the range. From Ghatghar one can descent down to Konkan by the Chhonda-Ghatghar pass to Chhonda. For pictures, follow this link.
